Get this—if you eat 100 more food calories a day than you burn, you’ll gain
about one pound in a month. That’s about 10 pounds a year. The bottom line
is that to lose weight, it’s important to make wise food choices, reduce
calories and increase physical activity.
Like many Americans, you probably eat out during the workday or on the weekends. Whether it’s carry-out, food court or a sit-down restaurant, you can make smart choices everywhere. The American Dietetic Association offers these tips to help you eat healthy:
-
Be size-wise about muffins, bagels, croissants and biscuits. A jumbo muffin has more than twice the fat and calories of the regular size.
-
For desk-top dining, keep single-serve packages of crackers, fruit, peanut butter, soup or tuna in your drawer for a quick lunch.
-
In place of fries or chips, choose a side salad, fruit or baked potato (hold the sour cream).
-
If you do choose the buffet, fill up on salads and vegetables first. Take no more than two trips and use the small plate that holds less food. Lighten up on mayonnaise-based salads and high-fat toppings.
